Not illustrated. 1898 Excerpt: ...because it is too light for a calcareous deposit of that size; and, secondly, we know if we study the eyes of birds we find in the vitreous body a lot of deposit of osseous matter. If you take the eye of an old rooster you will oftentimes find a lot of ossifi cation there; you do not find a calcareous deposit. Then in those birds that fly very high or have to withstand the pressure of the air, you find in front of the macula, partly oovering the papillae of the nerve, an arrangement that looks like a spread hand, and which is supposed to be folded in front of the eye to protect it from too high pressure on the nerve, and if you take out this thing you find that it is the very finest osseous formation. Calcareous deposits you will moitly find in the front part of the eye, in the rear part you do not find them. These osseous deposits, however, are very rare in the human eye. Chronic Interstitial Nephritis in Childhood.--Leonard G. Guthrie (Lancet). This paper is based on 7 oases occurring in children between 5 and 14 years, who succumbed to chronic interstitial nephritis. The diagnosis was confirmed in each case by autopsy. According to the author the most striking physical signs which attended the disease are: 1. Wasting; 2. Dryness, absence of perspiration, ooarseness, elasticity and pig mentation of the skin, together with-anemia; 3. High arterial tension and cardio vascular hypertrophy. The chief symptoms are: 1. Cerebral, including headache, vertigo, vomiting and convulsions. Tetany and visual disturbances, such as amaurosis or diplopia have been noted, and also cer ebral hemorrhage in two oases. 2.
